Session abstract
The slave trade is most often presented as a story of diaspora from Africa. However, we should not forget how profoundly the slave trade and the practice of slavery affected the continent itself. In this session, we ask how slavery operated in Africa and how communities responded. The session will explore the myriad types of material evidence of slavery and how they have been interpreted across the continent.
