Session abstract
Archaeometallurgy has at its disposition a growing diversity of analytic tools for apprehending the ancient techniques and technologies, provenance and circulation of mineral materials, or to establish the chronology of metallurgical activities. The increasingly frequent use of these « measurement tools », with great advantages for the history of metallurgies, invites us to discuss these advantages but also their limitations just as it raises questions about the nature and relevance of the « measured ». This session is thus an invitation to discuss what is measured in African archaeometallurgy today, as well as why, and how, it is measured, and finally the challenges (or issues) of this discipline in the writing of African history.
